The answers before the first batch.
From your first formula to your first production run, the details matter. Here is a straight answer to the questions founders bring to us most.

No guessing about the next step.
Shay Labs develops custom liquid and oil based cosmetic and personal care products. We begin with a product brief, make evaluation samples and refine the agreed formula. You own the formula we develop. Production is a later decision, with its own approved quantity, price and specifications. These answers come from the questions founders actually ask us.
Development
01How much does it cost to develop a formula?
A direct first-formula project starts with a $2,500 development fee. That applies at every production quantity, including 5,000 units or more, and when you bring an existing formula. If you want broader product and launch support, paid Beauty Brand Accelerator enrollment includes initial formulation setup for one approved product instead. You choose one paid path, not both. Direct development includes the agreed formula work, consultation, refinements to that formula, evaluation samples and standard sample shipping. Production is priced separately, and the direct development fee is not credited against a production order. If you purchase multiple formulas together in the same direct order, each additional formula is $1,250; later formula projects are quoted on their own.
02What if I already have a formula or ingredient list?
Bring it. Whether you have a complete formula or just an ingredient direction, we can start from what you have rather than make you begin again. We review the materials, evaluate samples as needed and prepare the formula for production. The direct first-formula development fee applies even when you supply the formula and regardless of order size; paid Accelerator enrollment is the alternative path that includes setup for one approved product, not a second fee.
03How many revisions and physical samples are included?
We keep refining the agreed formula with you until it is approved, without a fixed numerical limit on those refinements. The evaluation samples needed for that work and standard sample shipping are included. If you decide to create a different product or substantially change the brief, we will talk through the new scope before you approve any additional work.
04Can I choose ingredients or approve substitutions?
Yes. Share the ingredients you want to use or avoid, and we will build those preferences into the product brief. If a material needs to change, we will explain the options and get your approval before making a material substitution. You approve the final formula.
Testing & quality
01What are the standard tests, and when are they done?
We review ingredient quality during formulation. Every production batch, including the first run, then receives microbiological testing, pH testing where applicable and accelerated stability testing under the agreed product-specific plan. These applicable standard production tests are included in your agreed Shay finished-unit price. Before production, we confirm the methods, acceptance criteria, release checks and timing for any later observations, so you know what will be checked and when.
02What about preservative challenge or package compatibility studies?
We review the formula, its claims and its package to decide whether additional studies such as preservative challenge or package compatibility are needed. When they are, we will explain the work and agree on the scope with a qualified outside laboratory before you commit to it. Accelerated stability testing does not replace those product-specific studies.
03When can the product be released?
Once the production batch meets the approved specifications and the results required for release have been reviewed, it can move toward shipment. We agree on those checks before production, including applicable pH, microbiological and accelerated stability results. If the stability plan includes later observations, we will set out their timing in writing so you know what to expect after release.
Production & packaging
01What is your minimum production run?
Your first production order starts at 500 finished units per formula. Following orders start at 1,000 units per formula. That gives you a manageable first launch and a clear path to reorder as demand grows. We can help you choose packaging that works for your launch quantity and future runs.
02Can you give me a finished-unit price before development?
Yes, we can discuss a preliminary budget from your product idea, size, packaging direction and planned quantity. As the formula and components take shape, we can turn that into a finished-unit quote you can evaluate before approving production. We will distinguish Shay’s production price from any supplier-purchased components and freight, so you can see the full project picture.
03Who handles bottles, labels and retail cartons?
We can help you find the right packaging path. Shay can source suitable standard primary components and support you as you work directly with a specialist on custom label or carton artwork and sizing. In the agreed production scope, we fill, apply approved labels, seal and assemble approved retail cartons. We review component fit and supplier details with you before production.
04Do you handle storage, fulfillment and freight?
We can help plan the handoff from finished production to your next destination. Tell us whether inventory is going to you, a retailer or a fulfillment partner, and we will work through the available storage, freight and fulfillment arrangements and their project-specific rates with you before the order is approved.
Ownership & next steps
01Who owns the formula, and what do I receive?
The custom formula is yours as we develop it. Upon final formula approval, we provide the finalized formula with INCI ingredient names, exact percentages and agreed specifications. You are free to use another manufacturer without a royalty, transfer fee or exclusivity requirement. The standard formula package does not include manufacturing instructions, process parameters or a master batch record.
02Can we sign an NDA before I share my confidential formula?
Yes. Send us your proposed mutual NDA and we can review it before you share confidential formula details. Once the development agreement is signed, it also includes confidentiality terms. We can discuss the product direction without asking you to disclose a confidential formula first.
03How long does development take?
A typical formulation project takes about four to six weeks once we have the agreed brief and materials, with timing shaped by sample feedback and any technical changes. We will outline your first-sample plan and keep you updated as the work moves forward. Production is planned separately after the formula, packaging, testing scope and order are approved.
04What kinds of products are a fit?
We develop custom liquid and oil products for cosmetic and personal care brands, including suitable oral rinses. Tell us the format and intended claims, and we can help you identify the right development and production path. Bars, powders, toothpaste, swallowed supplements, OTC drug products and medical devices are outside Shay’s scope.
Let’s make the next step clear.
Bring the idea, a formula or a brief. We’ll talk through fit, first-run quantity and the work required to make it real.
